Cpl. Warner Katz of New York City, a German-born veteran of Guadalcanal, while operating as first scout for a reconnaissance patrol, became the first American infantryman to kill a Japanese soldier in Southeast Asia, in the Allied drive into northern Burma. Note: The mark, where a Japanese 25-caliber bullet creased his cheek and nostril.
